Tucked throughout the payload fairing of its Soyuz 2.1a launcher, the Progress MS-16 spacecraft rolled to the initiate pad on Friday (Feb. 12), forward of its deliberate Sunday initiate. This style floor crews can also dwell their closing flight preparations.

The Soyuz is a 152-foot-massive (46-meters) three-stage initiate car. It used to be anticipated to head on a northeasterly trajectory after initiate, jettisoning its four strap-on boosters roughly two minutes after liftoff. The rocket’s 2nd stage, (also is known as the core stage) is powered by one RD-108A engine designed to continue firing for roughly three more minutes forward of handing the reins over to the rocket’s third stage — an RD-0110 engine.

As soon as the rocket reached a definite altitude, the fairings fell away to uncover the Progress MS-16 spacecraft, which separated from the booster’s better stage nine minutes into the flight to produce its procedure to the dwelling field.

After separation, the Progress spacecraft ought to unfurl its solar arrays and navigation antennas. This can also then align itself with the dwelling field and prepare for docking with the Russian-constructed Pirs module Wednesday (Feb. 17) at 1: 20 a.m. EST (0620 GMT).

The Pirs module is a docking port on the Zvezda service module that doubles as an airlock for field crewmembers to exercise when conducting Russian-led spacewalks. Pirs is scheduled to be eliminated when the Progress 77 spacecraft ends its mission in July.

In its field, Roscosmos will lift up a long-awaited new addition: the Nauka laboratory. This can also tag the largest addition to the Russian section of the dwelling field for the reason that Zvezda module used to be build in in 2000. (There is one other, same port to Pirs, known as Poisk, that might per chance dwell on field.)

The Progress spacecraft is an uncrewed freighter that appears right same to its crew-toting counterpart, the Soyuz spacecraft, which is dilapidated to ferry astronauts to and from the dwelling field. The principle distinction is that Progress is dilapidated to fly cargo and will most likely be designed to burn up as it re-enters Earth’s ambiance, whereas Soyuz will land reduction on land.

On tale of Progress vehicles are disposable, they’re on the entire loaded with trash and other devices to be discarded forward of surroundings off on a course to burn up within the Earth’s ambiance, on the entire over a remote field of the Pacific Ocean.

Progress 77 is the principle of two deliberate cargo deliveries to the dwelling field within per week. On Saturday (Feb. 20), a U.S.-constructed Cygnus spacecraft is slated to initiate from Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia on its indulge in two-day out to the dwelling field.
